Configure Telnet on Cisco Router

Telnet allows you to remotely manage a Cisco router over a TCP connection.  Keep in mind that telnet is not secure and everything is transmitted in clear-text.

Configure Telnet on Cisco Router


Router(config)#username admin privilege 15 password CISCO
Router(config)#line vty 0 4
Router(config-line)#login local 
Router(config-line)#transport input telnet 


Router#show users 
    Line       User       Host(s)              Idle       Location
*  0 con 0                idle                 00:00:00   
 578 vty 0     admin      idle                 00:03:20

As you can see from the packet capture below we can view the full telnet session in clear text.
